I have a moving expense deduction question.. Here is my
Here is my situation. I work for DOD and was in Germany and PCS'd to VA in Sep. 2016. Our household goods allowance was only a certain amount and we had more that was shipped. I was told that we may be billed for the excess amount and can claim these for tax deduction as related moving expense, We waited and in Mar 2018, received a $9.000 plus bill from DFAS which we paid in then. I had my taxes professionally done in 2018 for 2017 and was told that we can claim the excess for 2018. However, the new tax law no longer allows for moving expenses. Question is , can I still file an amended tax for 2016? Pub 521, page 5 stated that the deduction can be claimed at the time of the expense or paid, Not our fault for the govt sending us the bill 2 years later. Your advice? … read more
