I am sending you my question. Georgia. None. Every year I
No Hello, Every year I have my income taxes prepared by a CPA firm My income taxes for 2016 were filed by my CPA firm in May of 2017. Because I am a full time graduate student I was enrolled in the Health Care Marketplace Exchange for my health insurance. I am dependent on the Premium Tax Credit for health insurance that I can afford. In October of 2017 I received a letter from the IRS stating that I had not filed a Form 8962 with my 2016 federal tax returns, and if this was not done I would lose my the Premium Tax Credit. I called my accountant and spoke with her personally on the phone. She said to download a copy of my 1095a form from the Healthcare.gov website and to fax her a copy of the IRS letter asking for the 8962 form. I did both of these things and she said she would file the form immediately. I have several emails from this time documenting our exchange and what was said. In May of this year (2018) my monthly payment for my health insurance went from $30/month to $689/month. After calling my insurance company I was told that the amount increased because I had lost my tax credit due to the Form 8962 not being filed. I immediately called my accountant who said she didn't understand why the form was not filed but she was sending the matter to the company's Resolution Team. She asked me to resend the original IRS letter, and the firm did file the appropriate form within the next 2 weeks. The problem is that my health insurance was now $689/month, and like I said I am a graduate student who cannot afford to pay this. I was told by my insurance company that unless I cancelled my insurance I would be legally liable for the $689/month so I was forced to cancel. Now I am without health insurance. Is the CPA firm liable for the loss of my health insurance?… read more
