Customer Question
Are social security tax...

Are social security tax and medicare tax withheld taken as Payments in form 1040 ?

Accountant's Assistant: The Accountant will know how to help. Please tell me more, so we can help you best.

In W-2 column 2 is showing Federal Income Tax withheld, which is to be reported on line 64 of form 1040. In the same W-2 box 4 Social security tax withheld and box 6 Medicare tax withheld. Are these two taxes to be input somewhere in Payments of form 1040 ?

Accountant's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Accountant should know?

No, I don't think so.

Social security tax and medicare taxes withheld from wages and reported on W2 form are NOT credited toward income tax liability on form 1040 line 64.

ONLY income taxes withheld from wages and reported on W2 box 2 are reported on that line.

.

You may ONLY claim refund for social security taxes IF you had more than one jobs and total social security taxes withheld from wages are above the annual maximum - for 2017 - above $7886.40

Let me know if that helps.

I will address all your tax related issues.
