I am married but my wife and I live in two seperate houses…

Customer Question
Please ! I am...

Please ! I am married but my wife and I live in two seperate houses and we have filed our 2017 tax returns yesterday with these seperate addresses included as well as our incomes using turbo tax. I have considerably large amounts of medical expenses for 2016 and 2018 that I cannot use . Can I transfer these amounts to my wife who has larger earnings and could use further deductions ? If possible how would we do this ?

Accountant's Assistant: The Accountant will know how to help. Is there anything else the Accountant should be aware of?

No, but we do not have an accountant . We only use home turbo tax and file ourselves.

I am seeing Canada as your country. Are you asking about Canada tax law on this?

Thank you

You and your spouse could have pooled your medical expenses and claimed them on one of the tax returns to reduce the overall amount you pay on your income taxes.

Unlike in countries such as the United States, spouses in Canada cannot file a single joint income tax return. Each spouse must file a separate return.

The tax preparation software may included an option to prepare a ‘coupled’ return. By using that method, the software maximizes the benefits for the couple as a whole while still generating two separate returns.

The spouse with the higher income should maximize deductions to reduce paying taxes at a higher rate. However, the Canada Revenue Agency does not always allow deductions to be passed on to the spouse. With you not living together you can not pass that cost on to her.

These answers are not helpful as I need the official canadian revenue policy statement in order to determine if we can actually claim these medical deductions. The provide information is too general to be helpful. If you cannot provide specific information on my questions then please cancel this order and please return my payment immediately ! Thanks

I just contacted the canadian revenue agency and spoke to their tax experts that have informed me that your advise is wrong and that either person can claim the medical expenses but only one of course. Therefore I am upset at your incorrect advise given which if followed would have cost us several thousand dollars in tax savings. Very poor expertise on your part ! Please cancel any and all of my dealings with your company and return my paypal payment immediately. A dispute with paypal will follow within 48 hours if my payment is not received by then !
