On the Federal Return...

On the Federal Return the Medical and Dental line expenses don't jive with what I enter. Line #4 all the money does not transfer to the Wisconsin Schedule 1 Line 1, the medical and dental expenses.

Accountant's Assistant: What's the brand and model of your computer? And the Operating System (OS)?

Sorry this took so long. It's a Dell Intel Core 5, Windows 7.

Accountant's Assistant: How long has this been going on with your computer? What have you tried so far?

Completely reentering the data.

Accountant's Assistant: Anything else you want the Computer Expert to know before I connect you?

No. I'm using my Apple to type this. Do you want my husband to get on his?

Hi, my name is ***** ***** welcome to Just Answer.

Wisconsin generally conforms to federal law in the preparation of state income tax Form 1. If you itemized your deductions on Schedule A of your Form 1040 federal tax return, and you were able to claim medical expenses because they exceeded the 7.5% threshold, you normally would carry that figure from line 4, Schedule A, to line 1, Schedule 1 of your state tax return. However, your state tax return has a place for deducting medical insurance premiums on Form 1, line 11. If you deducted premiums on line 11, that amount has to be deducted from your medical expense figure on Schedule 1, line 1.

So: Look at Form 1, line 11. See if the program has entered a deduction under "Code 1" or "Code 2." If so, those amounts would be deducted from the Schedule A, line 4 figure, and then carried to Schedule 1, line 1.

Details can be found on pages 17-19 of the instruction booklet for Form 1. Here's the link to the booklet: https://www.revenue.wi.gov/TaxForms2017through2019/2017-Form1-Inst.pdf

Hope that solves the mystery! If so, please don't forget to rate this answer. You can always return here with follow up questions on this topic at no additional charge. And thank you for using Just Answer.
