Hello,

Non resident aliens are taxed differently then a US taxpayers. A NRA must complete Form 1040NR, U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return when filing their taxes.

___

Many other factors do come into play such as treaties with other countries and deductions that US tax payers receive.

Investment Income realized in the U.S. that is not from a U.S. source is usually taxed at the rate of 30%, unless otherwise specified by treaty.
___

Below is a link and excerpt from the instructions for Form 1040NR.

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040nr.pdf

"Income that is not effectively connected with a trade or business in the United States for the period of nonresidence is subject to the flat 30% rate or lower treaty rate. No deductions are allowed against this income. "

___

Non Resident Aliens are only required to pay income tax on any income that is earned or otherwise realized from a U.S. source. They do not have to pay tax on any foreign-earned income.

Can they claim standard deduction on F-1 visa?

They would have to pass the green card test or substantial presence test before they could claim the standard deduction.
