On turbo tax, I can't...
On turbo tax, I can't seem to figure out whether my 20 yr full time college student is best to file his own taxes or I put him on my return. I am within weeks of being fully divorced and in agreement I can cliam my son as dependent and my wife (x) claims my 16 yr old daughter. What would I need to know from my fairly estranged son to make this determination?

your son if he worked and had income should file a tax return but he cannot claim himself as an exemption. You or your wife may claim the exemption on your individual returns.

My son made about $3000 so should he file. If so can I still put him on as exemption (up to what age?) and deduct his student loan / interest? or what can i deduct? is it even worth it?
Tax Professional: Curtis Mathews, Certified Public Accountant (CPA) replied 8 months ago

If your son earned that much he should file a tax return. As you said he was a full time student wo he cannot take the personal exemption for himself. Once he reaches age 25 he can file on his own and take the exemption regardless wehther he is a full time student. Until then you or your wife may take the exemption on you separate individual returns.
