I am sorry to disappoint you, but the IRS will not do anything about it. After today, if the return was not filed, the extension becomes invalid. An extension is type of good faith estimate, the IRS will not hold anybody liable for it. And many accountants do the same thing when filing last minute extensions. The extension is for extending time to file, not to pay, so it really does not matter if he claimed 0 or 100K income or liability.
