I was trying to fill out an online free file for my 1099R . I took an 1. Early distribution. However the e file is asking me to answer the question whether I took a regular distribution or if I withdraw my 2015 contributions.
Should I mark regular distribution.
I'm under 59 years old

Yes, it is a early distribution subject income tax and 10% penalty unless you qualify for an exemption. You took an early distribution.

No, you couldn't make any withdrawal if you didn't make any contribution. It is a regular distribution, not a withdrawal of your 2015 contribution.

I'm assuming I just mark my early distribution as a regular distribution and not that I withdrew 2015 contributions

New expert here. You are correct. Mark it as a regular distrubtion, just be sure that you put the correct code that appears in Box 7. A 2015 contribution would only apply if you were withdrawing money that you deposited in 2015 in excess of the allowed amount.
