Can I deduct on my tax return medical expenses paid by me

Customer Question

Can I deduct on my tax return medical expenses paid by me for a family member
who is in assisted living? This is my mother.
I have filed her return for many years, and always as a separate individual.

If she is in the Assisted Living facility for medical reasons, usually the facility publishes a percentage of their fees that may be considered medical expense.

You will need to check with the Administrator to see what they have on this.

You wouldn't be able to deduct the expense on your own return if she isn't your dependent.
