This answer was rated:

I have a high deductible medical plan. Last year my company started providing the option of taking a companion plan along with this, which helps to cover any hospital stays I may have. I enrolled in this. I think I know the answer, but I would like confirmation. Do the premiums for this companion plan get included in medical expenses like the premiums for the actual medical plan are?

Hello, Welcome to Just Answer

rramsook :

No the premiums on the company plan is not deductible because they are paid with pretax dollars from your salary.

rramsook :

Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks

I guess I'm a bit confused. When I look at my paystubs taxes and deductions have separate totals. How am I supposed to tell if they're pretax or not? The only medical expenses I've ever considered pre-tax are my HSA contributions.
