Im working on our W-4s for 2013. Im following the Two-Earners/Multiple

This answer was rated:

I'm working on our W-4s for 2013. I'm following the Two-Earners/Multiple Jobs Worksheet tables to make sure enough taxes are taken out.

Now, there is also an option to Married, but withhold at a higher single rate. If I've followed the Two-Earners instructions do I still need to check this?

My wife and I make a fair buck. I know we've got to pay more taxes than most but I just don't want to overpay.

Thanks for your help on this.

Hello and thank you for using Just Answer,

Customer:

Hi

Robin D :

No you do not need to mark that also. After you have completed the worksheet on the front of the W-4 form, working to step H. The number on step H is carried onto the Two-Earners/Multiple Jobs Worksheet on page two of the form.

Robin D :

You may not have known this but the IRS has a calculator that may be easier than the worksheet you have.

Customer:

So, I check "Married, but withhold at a higher single rate", I would be overpaying, correct?

Robin D :

Hi

Customer:

I didn't know that.

Robin D :

Yes,

Customer:

Do you have a link to the IRS calc?

Robin D :

YES!

Robin D :

Would you like the link

Customer:

Yes, please.

Robin D :

http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/IRS-Withholding-Calculator

Robin D :

It is so much easier than paper

Robin D :

At the end it will tell you what to place on each W4

Customer:

If you go to the site it reads, "The Withholding Calculator is temporarily unavailable for maintenance".

Customer:

Fiscal cliff related? ;-)

Robin D :

I was just in it but it may be because of the congress vote.

Robin D :

It just switched on me

Robin D :

It will be back soon

Customer:

Ok. Thank you for your response.

Robin D :

You are most welcome but your positive rating is thanks enough.

Robin D :

Did you have another question about withholding before you rate?

Customer:

Nope. I'll use the calculator and I'm all set. Thanks.

Robin D :

Great. I asked because I am released when you rate and I did not want to leave if you had more.
