do wedding photographers in south carolina have to collect

Resolved Question:

do wedding photographers in south carolina have to collect sales tax on the entire fee, or just on the physical sales (prints & albums etc). I know some states collect on everything and others only on the sale of physical goods, not services.

In SC, sales tax is collected on the entire fee that is charged to a customer, even when that fee includes your services.

The way the sales tax law is written in SC is that sales tax must be charged on the total gross proceeds of a sale made at retail level. It then goes on to elaborate on what may not be deducted from your gross proceeds, and one of the items listed is "labor or services" -- which means that your labor and services are taxable in the state.

Please refer to the following SC manual on sales taxes. In particular, refer to pages 20 and 21 which cover this issue.
