How do I calculate the cost basis for stock I sold

Resolved Question:

I sold 59.288 shares of Allstate stock and I need to find out what the cost basis is so I can file my taxes. I can''t locate any old statements, so I don''t remember what I paid for the stock originally.

Contact a stockbroker and give them the dates you initially bought that stock. They should be able to help. Can't you call the original person who sold that stock to you?

I don't have the date of the original stock purchase. I received this stock as it spun off from Sears stock that I owned. That stock was purchased when I worked for Sears, but my employemnt with them ended in 1992.

Contact a stockbroker and tell them about this spin off from Sears. They should be able to help you determine your original cost basis.
