Customer: Can't get my Subaru outback "trunk" to automatically close/open, and when I manually close it, it doesn't latch
JA: Have you tried silicone spray or WD-40?
Customer: I'm unsure how that would help in this situation
JA: What year is your Outback?
Customer: 2018
JA: Are you fixing your Outback yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I've tried pushing the button on the fob, the button by the dash, the memory button, following some previous posts. Nothing invasive though
JA: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: No

Hi,my name is ***** ***** I'm reviewing your question now,you may get a request for a phone call ,only agree to it if you find it necessary,Thanks!

Hi,sorry your having a problem let's try to reset the power rear gate, first press and hold the release button for about 2o seconds you should hear the latch move, raise the gate manually and then lower manually and allow the gate to rest on the latch striker from here it will close on its own and you should be able to now use the power rear gate normally, thanks, ***** ***** me know how it goes or if you need more help.

before I contacted you, the gate wouldn't latch closed. After performing your steps, it's latched (but not fully closed, has a little wiggle to it) and now will not open, and the button seems unresponsive. All the buttons, the wine on the gate the one on the driver's side inside the car and the one on the key. Please advise
Thanks, try procedure again hold outside release for 20-30 seconds to see if it will release also make sure all doors are unlocked
Customer
On key, I pressed unlock about 3 times, then at gate I pressed and held button for about 30 seconds no known change.
Does it beep or make any noises?Us the gate unlocked?
Customer
After performing your last step, no, there was no latching sound (which was made the earlier) no beeping from the car, the gate is still closed and not opening via button not manual movement
Customer
While sitting in the driver's seat, the dash say the lift gate is open, even though it is physically closer to being closed
Is the battery fully charged? Can you start the car?
Customer
car started with no issue
Thanks ,the next thing I would recommend would be to reboot the electrical system ,remove both battery cables and hold them together for a few minutes then reinstall and try holding the outside gate button again you may also need to reprogram the auto windows as well to do this use the passenger switch to to open then hold switch up for a second and then the same for the drivers window

I'm not sure what exactly happened but it's fixed. I'll let you know to the best of my ability what happened and what not. So I was locking/unlocking everything, pressing and holding the gate release inside the car, the key and on the gate, just trying to get something, then I started the car and turned it off then went back to the gate and I heard the latch engage/disengage sound so I opened the gate as much as I could then pressed the gate close on the gate door inside(what I'd normally press after loading groceries) and it moved about a foot in the closed direction, then I pressed it on the the driver's side inside the car, it moved another foot, repeat until it closed. Then I tried opening it, it only opened halfway then when pressed again it closed completely. Last night while I was searching for answers I remember seeing stuff about the memory button so I pressed that a couple times, now it's all good
Great news ! Glad it’s working now
