after head repair. 2 tanks of gas on repaired heads. Included heating surfacing seals guides.
Subaru Mechanic: David Craig, Auto Mechanic replied 7 months ago

ok well if its a sohc then you shouldn't have did any damage to the valves, at what point are you in the process? What do you have taken apart so far?

Ask Your Own Subaru Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I have only replaced cam sprocket and starting reinstall the belt.
Subaru Mechanic: David Craig, Auto Mechanic replied 7 months ago

its a non interference engine so you should be good. im wondering why it failed unless the tensioner failed.

Ask Your Own Subaru Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Also adjusted valves on head installation to spec. Oil level good. Pressure good
Sprocket failure buggered the end of the keyway on the cam shaft
Subaru Mechanic: David Craig, Auto Mechanic replied 7 months ago

oh, I have seen that happen.... the key way stripped or wallowed out

Ask Your Own Subaru Question
Subaru Mechanic: David Craig, Auto Mechanic replied 7 months ago

you got lucky with it being non interference

Ask Your Own Subaru Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Wallowed out. Funny. Everywhere i looks says ej25 is an interfernce engine. Non interference would be good.
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
The short button on the sprockey wided the of the keyway. The old sprocket separated. Was running like new. Tensioner is very has pressure. Difficult to colapse. As in pressure
Springs when pull the pin
Subaru Mechanic: David Craig, Auto Mechanic replied 7 months ago

new tensioner? if not i would think about replacing it

Ask Your Own Subaru Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I haven't replaced it. I bought at 167k now 180k. I replaced belt when i changed the pump. I don't know the history. What do you think caused the clatter before the sprocket failure. If it was an interference motor i would of suspected a stuck valve.
Subaru Mechanic: David Craig, Auto Mechanic replied 7 months ago

i really want to say possible oil seepage from the tensioner is what i have seen most

Ask Your Own Subaru Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Would the tensioner cause the clanking? And what force caused the sprocket to break with such force it it screwd the keyway?
Subaru Mechanic: David Craig, Auto Mechanic replied 7 months ago

if a tensioner fails its not holding pressure on the belt

Ask Your Own Subaru Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
If the it slips. It doesn't seem there would be enough tension to shatter the cam sprocket. The inner sprocket stopped and the out kept turning. You don't think it is stuck valve? Was loud. My plan is a new tensioner and and reassemble.
I just lut the heads back on. Was runny like new
Subaru Mechanic: David Craig, Auto Mechanic replied 7 months ago

ok, Im going to open this up to the other to chime in.

Hi,this is a interference engine ,is it possible cam seized?

Ask Your Own Subaru Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I'm hoping it didn't seize. I can turn it easily with a rachet for timing. I put the new sprocket on it started no noise but it was not running well. I may have been a cog off u5on the belt though.

Let me know,I'm betting we bent some valves but I hope I'm wrong

Ask Your Own Subaru Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
That's what I'm afraid of. Kust refurbished the heads less than 2 tanks ago.
Seats were ground. Think i could replace valves seals and guides without maching?
Subaru Mechanic: tamaz, Subaru master technician replied 7 months ago

Sure, guides shouldn't be necessary

Ask Your Own Subaru Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Yeah I'm think max 2 intake valves. I just saw a youtube and my clatter resembles
tensioner. Thinking the belt loosened and put slight outward tension on cam sprocket causing sprocket failure. Despite the clatter the engine ran well until the sprocket failed and the belt came off. My only other issue is the sprocket tore the end of the cam keyway. Y out at the end. The button on the new sprocket seems to engage tightly for timing

Hello there,

Sounds like the cam gear bolts were loose.

That's the only way a gear keyway fails.
