Control panel lights flickered on/off followed by total

Customer Question

Control panel lights flickered on/off followed by total electrical failure when backing out of parking spot. No control panel lights. Dead ignition. Not even the emergency flashers would work. Eventually managed to restart the engine, started backing out again, followed by another total failure as above. Finally managed to get it started again and made it home. Any suggestions on what might cause a total electrical failure such as this? Thanks.
JA: Just to clarify, what are the exact lights you're talking about?
Customer: All lights: control panel, headlights, dome lights, door panel lights
JA: What is the model/year of your Subaru?
Customer: 2005 Legacy wagon, standard engine
JA: Are you fixing your Legacy yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I don't have equipment to diagnose electrical problems. Just wondering if this might be caused by alternator failure or main computer failure.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: No... this is the best description of the problem that I can provide.

Sounds like your experiencing a poor connection, raise the hood and inspect battery and cable connections are they loose or corroded?
