Customer Question
Wife says battery dead...

Wife says battery dead, put trickle charger on, however it will pull 11-12 amps for 10-15 seconds then "click" to zero. this repeats . Checked and cleaned terminals, they weren"t bad????

Mechanic's Assistant: Did you test the battery with a voltmeter? And have you ever changed one before?

Tested - shows only 8 volts now, battery was purchased last april, ( above average grade) yes i installed

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model of your car?

2014 Subaru Legacy

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Legacy yourself? What have you tried so far?

Only trickle charger, to get battery up to test , never seen a charger alternate between 8amps charge / 0 cyclical?

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Uh I dont know...

Im just worried the car has an intermitant draw or short, I'll leave it on for awhile, but concerned it is not a dead battery issue

Hello there,

Sounds like a low state of charge battery, half flat, low s.g, with a charger that runs flat out then cuts out due to overload.

Many little chargers will do this.

Either you have a parasitic drain while the car is at rest, or you do have a battery internal fault.

I would try another charger first myself.

Gary
