Hi my name is***** am an ASE master technician and certified Subaru technician. I will outline the procedure that is involved when the power rear gate will not open. I have included the picture that shows you need to remove the trim cover inside the hatch that allows you to use a screw driver to push the release lever to the right to unlock the hatch. Then you should open the hatch all the way, gently shut the hatch to the halfway point, then use the keyfob or door handle to see if the hatch can recover into automatic mode. If this does not work, damage may have occured to the liftgate motor and being under warranty, you may need to take the Outback into a Subaru dealership to have the motor checked.
I hope I have earned your postive feedback, please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. Thanks and good luck!
