Customer Question

2009 Tribeca Limited, 85k miles. Makes whining sound when decelerating, even when in neutral. Could this be a partially stuck parking brake or something to do with a "hill holder"? (I do not have an electronic parking brake or a hill holder button)
JA: Have you tried pumping the regular brake a few times?
Customer: Not, but I will now. It is a very consistent whine though... always happens on decel
JA: Are you fixing your Tribeca yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Have not tried anything really yet... bought the car Tuesday. Got a pretty good break on price due to the noise, now I need a fix
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: not that I can think of

Could be a wheel bearing. Does the noise happen when the vehicle is not moving?

Expert:  Dan replied 8 months ago.

This could also be a rear differential problem, which then the entire differential would need to be replaced.

Only get the noise when decelerating, even in neutral. Also seems to drag, but that may be in my head

Need to have someone drive the car with all 4 wheels off the ground on jack stands or on a lift and use a stethoscope to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. We do this at the dealer all the time to find noises.
