Customer Question

2002 Subaru Outback 158,000 miles. Starting making a whirling sound coming from around the front passenger axle. Got much louder today. Car is a manual and sound is heard wheterh in gear or neutral. Jack up the front end and turn the wheels by hand, no sound. Thought it might be an axle, but doubting that now. It has blinded up once or twice in reverse to where it didn't seem like it wanted to back up. Sound is kind of like a card in a bicycle spoke and gains in intensity with speed. Turning doesn't seem to effect the sound.

Hello and welcome! This noise is most likely going to be a bad wheel bearing. We replace them in the shop all of the time on these vehicles. Just be sure that the tires are in good shape and not chopped and or cupped (which can cause this sort of noise) while rolling down the road.
