The light can come on for several reasons. Loose fuel cap, issues with the timing or the evap system, even a bad O2 sensor can cause the light to come on. Sadly there isn't any way to know without getting the code, and the code would likely have to be gotten by a shop because it's an older OBD1 setup. You will probably have to call around to see if anyone can scan it for you.
