2006 Outback 78000 km H6 engine air conditioner start

2006 Outback 78000 km H6 engine
air conditioner start blowing hot air. If I shut off engine and
leave for a while, or over night, air conditioner works fine again.
It seems to happen on really hot days.
Local mechanic says that there is sensor that is part of the compressor
and the whole compressor would have to be replaced.
