We have a 2004 Subaru. The a/c quit, and a mechanic replaced

Customer Question

We have a 2004 Subaru. The a/c quit, and a mechanic replaced the condenser. For the first few minutes of driving the problem seemed solved, but then we realized that the a/c would work for a few minutes, then pump warm air. Sometimes we would turn it off then on and it would work OK for a short time. Today we noticed that it would work on an intermittent basis whether we turned it on or off. The mechanic says we need a new compressor. Is that the likely problem? Could it be a thermostat problem/

Hi your mechanic is right, there is a built in thermosensor that cuts the compressor off when the case temp reaches a certain temperature so the compressor does not overheat, the correct repair is to replace the compressor, thanks for your time.
