Hi,the 1998 model was the first year for the Forester, this is definitely a model I would stay away from just because of the engine .The 1999-2002 models are slightly better looking but had head gasket and transmission problems,2003-2005 models are again a step up in appearance the engine has head gasket problems also.2006-08 are my personal favorite years although they still have the same engine ,the rest of the drive train is solid.2009-13 are good vehicles also but obviously the price will be much higher (still has head gasket issues).Every year the models have been better, the mileage where you begin so see things like head gasket leaks is about 80k(mainly just oil leaking)the engine will go forever if properly maintained, but I would say 150k would be my cut oiff in mileage, thanks for your time, good luck
