Mike,Have 98 outback with 73,000 miles, so far. Dealer

Customer Question

Hello Mike,
Have 98 outback with 73,000 miles, so far. Dealer said it is showing early signs of internal coolant leak, with hydrocarbons at 12ppm, and will need head gasket down the road. Cost to repair is a staggering $2700.00
Is this critical and how long should I wait to have this work done?

Has the vehicle overheated at all so far?

I wouldn't be in a rush to do this at this point, the classic sign is a overheating condition at highway speeds. The vehicle being 17 years old should also give you something to think about, the car may be worth $3500 so this may be a hasty decision based on the condition of the car

I my have to think about my options, since the work isn't critical at this point. Thanks for putting the issue into perspective.
