I'm trying to get...

I'm trying to get a calcuation for the needed header beam for installing a sliding glass door- for the permit.

Tutor's Assistant: OK. Tell me a bit more about what's going on so we can help you best.

Exterior wall is cathedral ceiling, 14.5 at the peak with 28 foot length. Door is to be installed at 3 feet from end.

We are submitting the permit ourselves, just need the calculation to input for the permit...Beam Calculation for the header -- "If the door is being installed on an exterior wall that supports roof loads, provide a beam calculation."this is asking for some calculations of weight and square footage. 28 feet total length, ceiling height is cathedral low of 7"9" to peak of 12.5 feet. (6 " framing)Door is 83" tall, 72" wide, 36 " from the end of wall.

I assume it will be a new beam #4 or #5 from my sketch.

I'm attaching a sketch of where the door is going in. single story on that side, but #5 looks closest to what's going in.
Roof trusses probably load to interior walls due to architecture, but unknown. Beaverton Oregon, asphalt shingle roof,
Floor joists are 16" apart

Thanks for the picture.

This opening is on the gable end of the building, so the 6' span header will only support some exterior wall load from above and a small strip of roof load.

I’d like to point out that a Professional Engineer’s standard of care typically includes a site visit to assess field conditions and get an overall understanding of the structure. This can obviously not be accomplished through the internet. The information provided here is meant for planning purposes only (general sizing and budgeting) and is based on the information provided by you. All loading cases considered are for vertical loads only, no lateral analysis has been completed. The information should be verified by a professional engineer who can visit the site to ensure that potentially important information has not been overlooked or omitted.

Here is a link to Chapter 6 of the Oregon Residential Code:

Look at Table 602.7(1), the 6th line down in the table. The minimum loading condition in the table is more than your condition (since you are on the gable end). Line 6 shows that a double 2x8 will span 6'-10".

So you can use a Double 2x8 for your 6' clear span header in your gable wall.
