I have a steel I-beam which measures 6" high, has a 3 5/16"

I have a steel I-beam...

I have a steel I-beam which measures 6" high, has a 3 5/16" flange, a 1/4" web, and the flange measures 5/16" on the outside edge and is carrying a total load of 8,250 lbs. The beam is 21' long, is supported on each end by the foundation wall, and presently is supported in the center by a telepost. Since this telepost is in the way (In basement), I would like to remove it.
If I remove the telepost, could you tell me what size I-beam i would need to place under the existing I-beam to maintain at least an L/360 deflection?

I'm glad you asked, because I only passed along a part of my calculations. My calculations are: Half the length of the joists on each side of the beam x 22' (The beam length to the support walls is 21'. To be on the safe side I used 22'). One set of joists is 6' 8" and the other is 13' 6''. 22x3.4x55 lbs/sq. ft. = 4,110. 22x6.8x55 = 8,228 for a total load of 12,338 lbs.

I’d like to point out that a Professional Engineer’s standard of care typically includes a site visit to assess field conditions and get an overall understanding of the structure. This can obviously not be accomplished through the internet. All loading cases considered are for vertical loads only, no lateral analysis has been completed. The information should be verified by a professional engineer who can visit the site to ensure that potentially important information has not been overlooked or omitted.

You can use a W10x19 (50 ksi) steel beam for your 21’ clear span beam. The beam is 4” wide and 10.25” deep. It weighs 19 pounds per foot of beam length.
