I need to ride. Sorry ..typo. I have a existing garage withSorry ..typo. I have a existing garage with a 16 foot garage door. The door is on the gable end of the garage and the total span is 16'4", with a total garage outside width of 16'11". The garage was originally post and beam, with posts every 10 feet , and has a total depth (length) of 28 feet. I can't fit my 2 cars side by side on the garage and open any car door, so I want to widen the structure. I plan to replace the 16' door with two 8' doors, and overall widen one side of the structure by around 3 feet. Because the garage has an attic, the posts extend above the attic floor/garage ceiling, with the top of the beam 21" above the floor. Roof rafters sit on top of the beam. My plan is to extend the rafters on one side of the garage only to meet a new outside wall, placing a new beam at the attic floor level to carry the existing roof and floor load, and cutting off the existing posts , placing them above the new carrying beam. Essentially the existing roof structure remains intact, removing the existing outside bearing wall of the garage, and replacing it with a 28' long beam to carry the roof and floor load. allowing me to widen the garage. What size carrying beam can span 28 feet for this load? … read more
