I have a question. I have a 50 year old single story home in
I have a question. I have a 50 year old single story home in Kentucky USA over a walk out basement block foundation. 2 layers of asphalt shingles and minimal snow load. I am considering cutting a hole in the block foundation, standard size triple cell block in good shape on a 24" footer, and installing a 5 foot slider in the walk out basement. There is limited headroom in the basement for a standard Rough Opening/RO so am limited in header size above the sliding door. I have maybe 4" for a header and would like to consider a steel I beam, perhaps a W4x13, above the door. So a 5' span and up to 8" on each side sitting on top of block foundation. Would this work to support the house/roof load with acceptable deflection? … read more
