How much can I lift (point load at center span) from a 8" 23lb per foot I beam bearing at each end with a 26' span and top horizontally stabilized every 8'

I want to install beams across shop to lift items with. I will actually install two beams 9' apart and then hang a third and forth beam on carriers from main beams giving me full movement in the area below with two point of lift.

HelloDo you mean a W 8 x 24? There is no W 8 x 23Do you know the grade of steel?

The top of the page the steel guy had said I beam (s) A36 and had the option of 18.4 or 23 Lb per foot 8" I beams.

Please see PDF drawing. I will have 4 points to lift from but would like to know what I can lift from one point at worst case situation directly below cent er of one of the main beams. If I spread the load out over more points I know i could lift more.

Is it an old beam? A36 hasn't been used for WF beams in a very long time.

It looks like you are talking about an S beam, not a W beam.

Can you add dimensions to the sketch, so I can determine the span of the beams?

Correct it should be stronger than a W beam

26' for main beams lateral support at top every 8'. 10' between main beams

W beam is the most efficient shape for a beam. I will check these and get back to you in a couple hours

I need a bottom flanges to be close to 4" for trolleys I have to fit . If a w beam i stronger I guess I am OK with a w beam to but the ones I have seen have thinner center webs.

The max point load for that S8x23 is 4000 pounds
