My home is a timber framed ranch built in 1969. I recently
I recently purchased a timber framed ranch in upstate N.Y. that was built in 1969. 2x4 exterior walls and 2x8 rafters spaced 16" on center. Roof pitch is 3.5/12 footprint of home is 34' eve to eve and 45' gable to gable. Currently 8' ceilings with 2x6 ceiling joists supporting eve side walls. I want to remove ceiling joists and vault the ceilings to bring height to 13' at ridge. I thought about an I beam or LVL under existing ridge but have decided against the idea for several reasons. I would like to open it up as much as possible using minimal rafter ties / ceiling joists instead. Would it be sufficient for me to put in (5) 34' 2x10 rafter ties that were spaced evenly over the 45' span? The rafter ties could be three, four or five thicknesses of 2x10 that are through bolted every 16" and connected to the top plate with a steel L bracket and nailed into the ends of the rafters. I would also consider using threaded rod to make the rafter ties even less noticeable but i'm struggling to find information on how to connect the rods to the top plate and rafters and where to find the appropriate hardware. … read more
