Customer Question

I want to eliminate a verticle support (8"X8"X16") along an open side of my carport that is 20" long. The current beam is a solid 8"X4" with just one support column in the middle of the span. What size lumber can I use to eliminate the column with a height no greater than 8" and the width no greater than 8"?
JA: OK. Is there anything else the Structural Engineer should be aware of?
Customer: Each end of the beam will rest on a masonry wall.
