What is the moment of inertia. I have a 6 X 6" beam runningi have a 6 X 6" beam running the length of my house on the basement level. There are 2 beams, aprox. 10' apart. There are bearing walls in parts of the overall length. At one end of the "family" room, there is a 6 X 6" post from floor to the beam. It has been shimmed over the years (the house is 108 yrs - heritage) The post is aprox 3' from the exterior bearing wall of the house. The engineer suggested "laminating" the beam @ the point of post contact. I have made up 2 plates (1/4" plate, 4" X 30" with 10 equally spaced 9/16" holes for 1/2 X 2.5" lag screws. I am planning to drill 3/8" holes X 2" deep on both sides of the beam and bolt the plates to the beam. … read more
