Sorry ..typo. I have a existing garage with a 16 foot garage door. The door is on the gable end of the garage and the total span is 16'4", with a total garage outside width of 16'11". The garage was originally post and beam, with posts every 10 feet , and has a total depth (length) of 28 feet. I can't fit my 2 cars side by side on the garage and open any car door, so I want to widen the structure. I plan to replace the 16' door with two 8' doors, and overall widen one side of the structure by around 3 feet. Because the garage has an attic, the posts extend above the attic floor/garage ceiling, with the top of the beam 21" above the floor. Roof rafters sit on top of the beam. My plan is to extend the rafters on one side of the garage only to meet a new outside wall, placing a new beam at the attic floor level to carry the existing roof and floor load, and cutting off the existing posts , placing them above the new carrying beam. Essentially the existing roof structure remains intact, removing the existing outside bearing wall of the garage, and replacing it with a 28' long beam to carry the roof and floor load. allowing me to widen the garage. What size carrying beam can span 28 feet for this load? … read more

I have a question for a structural engineer. I am seeking to
I am seeking to add a supplemental structural ridge beam under a ridge board in an old garage, which has some roof sagging (3-4"). It's got 2x8 rafters, 4/12 pitch, and just a 2x8 ridge board with no rafter ties and just a few collar ties. Span is 24'. We would like to drywall the underside of the "cathedral" type ceiling. The walls are concrete block except for the triangular gable ends which are framed. We are not looking to remove anything existing, just slide in a supplemental beam as described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMSo-avByjY&list=WL&index=6&t=0s The video shows roof trusses being cut, but we have no trusses - it just describes the method of lifting we'd like to use. My question is, what size LVL beam do we need? The supplier near me offers microlam LVL 1 3/4" thick beams in 14", 18" tall, and other heights, in any length, that are supposed to be sandwiched to make any width like 3.5" or 5.25". We do not want to add rafter ties because the vertical walls are only 7' tall and we need the headroom. … read more
