Customer Question

I have a question about reinforcing a floor joist that was notched too deeply,
JA: OK. Tell me a bit more about what's going on so we can help you best.
Customer: When the duct work for a small bathroom was run the tech cut nearly 3/4s of the way through two floor joists. The joists are yellow pine 2x10's over 100 years old. He reinforced with 2x4's on joist hangers and screwed to the joist. I am installing a new shower and tile. My deflection factor is within range but I'm trying to head of future problems. I cannot replace the joists or sister full length ones. I don't think heading it off since there are two joists involved. Would building something like a cripple wall underneath the joist provide adequate support?
JA: Is there anything else the Structural Engineer should be aware of?
Customer: Yes. we need to notch out the top of one of the affected joist just a small bit to allow for the drain. We can use an offset fixture but will still need to notch some. I should note that the major notching was done near the end of the joist and they only span 6 feet and are 16" OC.
