Did I just spend $36.00 to answer your questions? Will you be answering my question about the size of a beam needed to span 6"x 6" columns 8 ft on center?
Expert:  StructuralEng replied 1 year ago.

Yes, I will be answering your question about the beam, but I need to clarify your information. You said it will extend 5' off the house, which implies the rafters are 5' long. I need to make sure we're on the same page with everything so I give you the best answer.

Thank you for replying back. The best description I can give you is that the rafters will have a angle ratio of 6' :12'. I am not exactly certain of the total length of the span for the rafters. The horizontal distance from the wall of the house the beam will be 5 ft.

You will need a double 2x10 southern pine no. 2

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
We use Douglas Fir in my area of California. Will a 4" x 8" doug fir be acceptable instead of southern pine??
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I ment a 6" x 8" doug fir.

As the beam? A 6x8 is not typically used as a beam

Expert:  StructuralEng replied 1 year ago.

A single 6x8 will not be as good as a double 2x10. A 6x8 is classified as a timber, and timbers have much lower allowable stresses than dimension lumber. You could use a double 3x8
