I would like to create...

I would like to create a clear span of 36’. One side of the 10’ by 36’ floor of the loft would be supported by the beam and the other hung off of existing 6x6 support poles on the outside of the pole building.
This would hold up a 10’ x 36’ loft in the shop. It is not part of the structural supports of the building at all.
I would like to keep as much head space as possible on the first floor, therefore have a compact beam height as possible. What size a beam is required?

Customer:

2x8 1' oc and 3/4 T&G

Customer:

change that to 2x6 1 ft oc and 3/4" t&g plywood

StructuralEng : You can plan for a W12x40 ASTM A992 Gr. 50. It's a steel I beam and is 12" deep x 8" wife and weighs 40 pounds per foot

can you set the joists on the bot***** *****p of the beam or do the joist have to be on the top?

StructuralEng : It would be a bigger beam if you want to do that

really trying to get less height on the beam (12") any other options ? would 2 beams equally spaced... one in the middle and one on the edge make any difference?

StructuralEng : Only if you can provide some cross bracing to brace the beams laterally

StructuralEng : 36' is a very long clear span

You can use the joists set on top to brace the beam if you have a mechanical connection

Information from the original question….

You called for a W12x40 ASTM A992 Gr. 50 beam.

What size beam(s) would be required to install 2 beams rather than one larger beam? Again 10’ x 36’ loft/floor with 2x6 joists 16” O.C. with ¾” T&G flooring.

Outside the wall band joist would be attached to 6 x6 posts of pole building.

4’ O.C. first beam 36’ long with as compact height wise as possible

8’ O.C. from the outside wall, second beam 36’ long and as compact as possible height wise.

2’ of the floor would cantilever from the last beam.

W8x58 beams ASTM A992 Gr. 50. They are 8.75" deep x 8.22" wide and weighs 58 pounds per foot.
