Hello, I have a project...
Hello, I have a project in which the second floor living space and roof load are supported by two 1 3/4 x 18" LVL's clear span 24'. the double LVL currently has a sag of 1 1/8". Will adding a laminated timber 3 1/2" wide x 24" tall and thru bolting the LVL's to the new timber be sufficient to eliminate the current deflection?

StructuralEng :

Hello

StructuralEng :

How are you doing? I'll be happy to assist you

StructuralEng :

What is the joist length on each side of the beam?

StructuralEng :

It supports the second floor and roof? What about the attic?

StructuralEng :

Does it support any ceramic tile?

Customer:

I'm good. What size beam would be appropriate size wise for this situation? 14' floor joist (2x10) n one side and 5' ceiling joist (2x6) on the other

Customer:

it supports the attic ceiling joist and a laundry rm. that has ceramic tile

StructuralEng :

If you have ceramic tile you will need a piece of steel to keep deflection under control for that span and loading

Customer:

The LVL's are directly under the second floor outside wall. There is a shed roof that runs into that wall .

StructuralEng :

You can put in a new I beam or sister with a channel (maybe on both sides, but you'll need to lift the floor back to the starting point to remove teh existing deflection or it will always be there.

StructuralEng :

So it's also supporting teh roof?

StructuralEng :

What is teh city and state so I can look at snow loading?

Customer:

the plan is to jack up the house to eliminate the sag or were wasting our time. Ohio , Strongsville

Customer:

what size beam would be sufficient? I would also have a flange welded to the bottom to tuck under the LVL,s

StructuralEng :

Can you post a cross section of the beam you have with whatever flange (steel?) you have?

Customer:

I don't have beam yet , I need it sized. that's why i'm asking you.

StructuralEng :

MC18x42.7 ASTM A36 steel.

StructuralEng :

Thru-bolted at 12" on center.

StructuralEng :

Make sure the channel bears directly on teh supports

Customer:

Thank you .

StructuralEng :

No problem. I'm happy to help. Good luck with your project
