Hello, We are building...

Hello, We are building a first floor timber deck. Part of it will be above a double garage door with a proposed span of about 8.5m to allow vehicles underneath in to the garage. The deck will be attached to the house by a new timber ledger. The new beam will be only be about 1.6m parallel distance from the house with new posts and footings at each end. We would like to know the specification of the beam and if it should be timber (preferred) or steel. Many thanks..

Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX come out 1.6 m from the house ledger to the proposed new beam 8.5 m - photo of existing deck attached. So each joist is 1.6 m long, each connecting to the 8.5 m beam supported on two new proposed posts. Only the weight of the deck will be supported which will be 1.6 x 8.5 m long. Plan also attached. Yes. I asked questions yesterday that appear to not be there.

The picture already has a deck. Are you adding a beam at the end of the deck. The plan also shows joists extending beyond the deck and a posts in the middle of a 7.4 m span. Please clarify.

If the deck is existing and you're not altering it, why are you adding a beam?

OK, because the existing joists are rotting and also go through into the house. They are cantilevered out from the house. These need to be removed and the deck removed as it is about 30 years old and all rotting. To replace the deck (as shown in photo) we need to start again and bolt to the house a new "ledger". This will allow us to run new joists 1.6 m out from the house. But as there is now no support we need a new beam to span across the garage. The question is what size will the 8.5 m beam need to be?

Steel. It's an I beam. A timber beam will be very large with that span.
