The joists run north/south - the south joist length is 15' 10 1/2 ", the north joist length is 15' 5".
Customer:
The floor is a concrete slab, no tile. The 4x4 posts are on their own footing.
Customer:
The upper floor *is* ceramic tile

That is to say, the floor supported by the joists :)
Customer:
The subfloor is one layer of 3/4" 4" planking laid at an angle, and two layers of 1/2" marine plywood on typo of that, then steel mesh and the scratch coat and then the tile.

StructuralEng : You're looking for a steel beam, correct?
StructuralEng : You can plan for a W8x28 beam ASTM A992 Gr. 50. It's 8" deep and weighs 28 pounds per foot.
StructuralEng : There is no way to get a wood beam to work for that span and load for the deflection required for a ceramic tile floor within the depth that you need

I was not thinking steel, it seems daunting to get a 400 lb beam into the basement and positioned - I was thinking more in line with a micro-lam or similar, I have read about improving the deflection properties of a micro-lam by bolting a 1/4" steel plate to the bottom of the beam, is that a possibility here?
StructuralEng : I apologize for te delay. The system never notifies me that you had responded
StructuralEng : Adding a plate to the bottom will not help in any appreciable way unless te fastener pattern is designed for the horizontal shear flow and then it will only help by about 10% or so
StructuralEng : aspa 1/4" vertical plate in between the plies of the LVL will help
StructuralEng : A 7" x 7.25" LVL will deflect approximately 1.5" under a full design load. This is far too much. Even if a steel plate on the bottom gets it to 1" or 1.25", it's still too much
StructuralEng : For the ceramic tile, the deflection needs to be around 0.3"
