I want to build a...

I want to build a pergola. The base will be 14' by 16' the top will be 16' by 24'. I want it to be supported by 4 6" by 6" post (5 1/2") which will be bolted to concrete walls 14' apart. I plan to have the posts 16' apart with 4' cantaliever on both ends. On top of the glue lam will be 41 or 42 4" by 6" posts 16' long. I'm figuring a 24' long glue lam 5 1/2 " wide but not sure of the height.

Can you tell me your city and state do I can look at icing loads?
I assume you'll be using a pressure treated glulam?.

There is no ice issues, elevation of property is at 500 zip code xxx in california....I donot need pressure treated, I have drawn a sketch showing side and top view and there will be a total of 32 4'by6" atop the glulam.

If you want a 5.5" wide glulam, you can plan for a depth of 9". This is for a glulam with a minimum E of 1800 ksi and a minimum Fb of 2400 psi. This will limit deflection to span/600. If you could rate my answer, I would appreciate it. I'll be happy to answer additinal questions on the topic.

So when you say 9" is this the finished height of beam?
I just got a price for 2 101/2"(finished dimension)....beams...$1150, thanks so much for your help...I also have a call to a buddy of mine, and I appreacate your input.

Yes. Glulam beams are card out as the actual dimensions, not nominal dimensions like a 2x4.
