got to price a loft...

got to price a loft conversion is steel best way to support the floor or can it all be done in timber the clear span that the steel/timber needs to carry is 3800mm this will sit on the party walls, the joists to come off this will span approx 2900mm, I think 150 x 50 joists will do it but will likely go for 150x75 just need to know the clacs and size of steel/timber?

Before we get started I’d like to point out that a Professional Engineer’s standard of care typically includes a site visit to assess field conditions and get an overall understanding of the structure. This can obviously not be accomplished through the internet. The information provided here is meant for informational purposes only (general sizing and budgeting) and is based on the information provided by you. Only vertical gravity loads will be considered, no lateral loads or analysis is looked at (this can be a big part of the design that will need to be considered). The information should be verified by a professional engineer who can visit the site to ensure that potentially important information has not been overlooked or omitted.

two brick width no cavity it will be sitting as low as poss to the upstairs ceiling. not sure what you mean by brick above beam?

How many feet of brick will the beam have to support?

it is a terraced house the roof timbers/brick above steel would be approx 700mm

You definitely want steel if it's supporting brick.

StructuralEng :

You can use an LVL, but it will be big.

Customer:

but nothing will be sitting on top of the steel other than it sitting on padstones in pockets on the party walls

the steel is just to support the floor joists

I thought you just said 700mm high brick wall will be on top of the beam?

StructuralEng :

If it's only to support the joists, then you can use an LVL, but steel will be much smaller

Customer:

sorry was getting confused was thinking the brick wall on the party wall to your question, what size steel would suffice just for floor joist supports

ok the joist coming off it ideally want to hang them from the steel by putting timber in the web does this sound right. going off joist calc I can span 3.13m at 400 mm centres with 6x2 joists will use 6x3 though for less bounce

StructuralEng :

It's not ideal, but I'll take that into account. It will result in a column section (more stout) being used. It's still an I-beam, just more boxy.

StructuralEng :

You can plan for a UC 152x152x23. This will limit deflection under a full design load to 1/4". You’ll need to have a local engineer size the support posts and footings and design and detail the connections. It was great talking with you, do you have any additional concerns?
