I am building a storm shelter that will be buried with two foot of dirt cover. I am going to weld wide flange beam spines on top of the steel plate every two foot. The span is twelve feet. What size wide flang beam do I need to support the load of the dirt on the roof of the shelter?

Only vertical gravity loads will be considered, no lateral loads or analysis is looked at. The information should be verified by a professional engineer who can visit the site to ensure that potentially important information has not been overlooked or omitted.

StructuralEng :

You can plan for a W6x20 beams at 2' on center ASTM A992 Gr. 50. The first number is XXXXX depth in inches and the second number is XXXXX weight of the beam in pounds per foot. You’ll need to have a local engineer size the support posts and footings and design and detail the connections. It was great talking with you, do you have any additional concerns? Thsi is just for the beam size and not the particulars of how you'll connect the plate or other members.
