Marc the plumber : Ok strange. Do you have a jet tub or a tub that rarely gets used in the master bathroom?
Marc the plumber : If so I would recommend maybe putting water in the tub drain to ensure the trap is full of water

My wife an usually shower in the master bath in the morning. We use the sink and toilet occasionally when we are home in the evening.

To clarify our tub and shower is a one piece unit. There is at least one shower taken in it every day.

The other thing is the bathroom always smells fine.
Marc the plumber : Ok, this is a strange occurance for sure. There must be a common denomenator during those hours...maybe an attic fan on a timer or a ventilation system, fresh air exchanger?? Just throwing some various things that could be the culprit other than plumbing. With the plumbing it should be a constant smell not just during specific hours.

Here is the idea we are working on: There is a sewer vent or trap problem. During the morning or evening there is more use of the sewer system. This additional makes the smell come in the evening around the same time, but not exactly the same time.

The plumbing for the master bath runs right under the bad smelling bedroom.
Marc the plumber : Okay well unless there is a slight leak in the drain, that would typically present as a stain or water leak I don't believe that is the problem but anything is possible as it may be slight enough to be absorbed or evaporated. If a vent has been left unconnected then this could be the problem but would typically occur constantly. if it was a trap problem you would typically be able to hear an empty trap as water is flushed or drained from a nearby fixture. Or you would hear the trap gurgling as it is being siphoned during a flush or draining of another plumbing fixture.

This is such a strange problem. I know what un-vented sewer gas smells like. This is similar, but different. I just can think of anything else that would cause this smell.
Marc the plumber : What is located below the bedroom? Is it a basement, 1st floor or cement slab? Is there a automatic fan such as a bathroom exhaust below? Depending on the location Of your home and the codes (such as ashrae) that requires a automatic fan to run for ventilation purposes. Other than that do you have a sewer ejector pump?

The bedroom is on the main floor. There is an unfinished area of the basement directly under the bedroom. I haven't seen any water leaks etc. The basement also smells fine.

There are no finished bathrooms in the basement. We have a are exchaner to vent the two bathrooms on the main level. That fan has a manual control. We press a button and the fan runs for 20 min. We have tried turning on this fan to vent the smell, but it has no effect.
