Is it supporting roof load?

a 4x4 is really small. I need to figure out the loading

The only load appears to be just the joists above the beam that the ceiling is attached to they pass over the beam but are not jointed on the beam. the main roof is supported on seperate large lerlings on brick supports

Do you have attic space above teh beam?
Customer:
Yes we have an attic above the beam they will be about 8 feet on each side of the beam before they are on the outer wall of the house and on an intrenal brick wall.

Do you know what the reinforcin in the beam is?

It looks like a steel rod

it is in the beam approx 4mm in diameter the beam itself is 9feet long supported on the remainder of the wall

If that's really supporting the attic, there is no way it works on paper, not even close

The attic is not a room its just the loft space and if not right what would be right either in concrete or steel if i have to replace it

You can use a double 2x8 wood beam

is that two beams joine together to form a beam 4inches in width be 8 inches in depth what would the size of steel need to be

Steel could be a 3.5" square tube with a 1/4" wall thickness.

if i was to use an eye beam what would the size need to be please i presume that i could get either the eye beam or the square tube from a steel merchants
StructuralEng : The smallest I beam is 4" deep, do it won't be smaller

okay it looks like it needs to be the square tube to avoid the least damage when i replace it
