How can I convert a XML file to a readable document?

Customer Question

How can I convert a XML file to a readable document?

Hi,

Welcome to Justanswer. I can help you with this question.

XML files are usually opened with a Web browser (like Internet explorer or chrome) and will display all the content. If you would like to take a look at the code itself, you can choose to open it in any text editor like Notepad for example.

If you can give me an example of what are you expecting to see in an XML doc then I can guide you further

Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

I have also used this website - http://www.pdfconvertonline.com/xml-to-pdf-online.html to convert the XML file to PDF format which you can open in adobe acrobat.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
ok
Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

Hi, it seems that the file was created by a software - SMS backup and Restore. Will it be possible for you to send me the actual XML file itself ?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
it was created from software, I'm trying to retrieve text messages from a samsung phone
Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

ok, I am looking at the software you are using. Can you please make sure that you are following this instruction and take the backup once again -

Make sure that the preferences for “Add XSL Tag” and “Add Readable Date” in the Preferences of the app are checked before taking a backup

Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

Once you take the backup again, software should create an actual SMS backup file for you

Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

Can you please confirm once you are able to see the backup XML file

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
don't see these options
“Add XSL Tag” and “Add Readable Date” in the Preferences of the app are checked before taking a backup
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
in the program
Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

ok, could potentially be a different version of the software. DO you however see the Backup file itself ?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I was able to back up to the phone and now it shows a print version
Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

ok, that sounds good.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
now to transfer to flash drive
Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

if you want, there is another easy way to look at the file. Simply open the file in excel. Follow these instructions -

  1. Open Excel and select File > Open and then select XML Files (*.xml) in the file type dropdown.
  2. Select the backup file from the list. Press Open.
  3. Select "open the file without applying a stylesheet"

That should bring up all the SMSes

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I just open it in excel, didn't look readable
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
let me try it again
Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

if possible, can you please attach the file in your message and send it across

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
getting a error message
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
We're sorry – an unknown error occurred. Please try again.
Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

hmm, can you please send me the file so I can try it out as well

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
email?
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
It wont allow me to attach the file
Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

You can attach it in the message itself if you want.

Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

or just load it to your google drive or box account and send me the link

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I already tried and I'm getting this error message
We're sorry – an unknown error occurred. Please try again.
Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

it might be easiest to simply load it to Google Drive. The file will probably get blocked through email as well because of the security reasons

Sorry, just realized that I might have posted the wrong link. Please use this one instead -

Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

Hi, Can you please confirm that you got the file. Since they contain your personal SMS, I will delete the link once you confirm to protect your privacy.

Please let me know.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I got it, but its still difficult to determine the actual dates and conversions.
Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

The dates that are coming up are because of the way software is operating. "Add readable date" option would have corrected it like I mentioned earlier but it seems like you are using an old software version which does not have this option.

Can I go ahead and deactivate the link then ? Please let me know if I can help with anything else. Will really appreciate if you can kindly provide a rating without which I am not credited by website for helping you.

Regards,

Manas

Expert:  manas11 replied 1 month ago.

One more thing, if you look at the "readable_date" column in the file, that will give you the actual date the SMS was sent. It seems like software is creating multiple fields and you simply have to choose which one is useful for you.
