Customer Question

I run Windows 10. I reinstalled Firefox and imported the bookmarks in the profile that I had backed up under Windows 7. The data seems to be there in the Windows 10 profile (I can see the number of MB). However, the bookmarks don't show up when I open Firefox.

Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

its ok, no need to call

I want you to reset Firefox

  1. Click the menu button and then click help .

  3. Click the Reset Firefox… button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page.
  4. To continue, click Reset Firefox in the confirmation window that opens.

I backed up the Firefox profile files under Win 7. I switched to Win 10 and reinstalled Firefox. I ran the Firefox import but the old bookmarks did not appear. I also created a new Firefox profile. That didn't help.
The file transfer seems to have succeeded inasmuch as I see the number of MB.
I have created a few new bookmarks today and these do appear. But I need to use the old bookmarks that go back several years.
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

Can you tell me this please?

Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

yes, nothing there though about resetting Firefox...

Anyway I'll just keep going and hope you have not done these other steps I say...

Do you have google chrome installed?

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Needless to say, I also rebooted several times
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I also have Chrome
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I also reset Firefox. Wrote this earlier
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

ok, now in Chrome, click on the three bars in the top and click on Settings

Then click on Import bookmarks and Settings

Choose Firefox and tell me if they are then imported please into there.

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Message: I have to close Firefox to do so. Will I be able to get back to you?
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

yes, just return back to this web page please

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok. will do
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

thanks

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Chrome only imported the very few new bookmarks from today
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
it apparently didn't "see" the old ones either
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

Ok, then we will try to repair it via a system repair

Press the windows key + X and click on Command Prompt (admin)

A black window opens

Type in

chkdsk /f

Press enter

Say yes to the question it asks then restart the computer

then try to have Chrome import the booksmarks

Let me know the results please

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
chkdsk won't run unless I reboot. But I've had a long session with a Microsoft tech today who checked my PC every way possible. For your info, in addition to the "import" method which didn't work, I also copied folder by folder the old ones into the new profile.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
What I don't understand: the Firefox profile folder appears in 2 locations: AppData Local and AppData Roaming
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

ok... I asked a few times everything you have done, and each time I find out after typing out a whole list of instructions you have already done this, without specifying it.

Sorry but until you please tell me everything you have already done it is pointless to give more instructions.

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I opened command as admin and entered "inchkdsk". It isn't recognized
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

ok, but this is not the instructions.

Type in

chkdsk /f (not inchkdsk)

Press enter

Say yes to the question it asks then restart the computer

then try to have Chrome import the booksmarks

Let me know the results please

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok. will do and then get back to you
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

thanks

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Chrome again only imported the few bookmarks from today. They now show up 3 times.
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

how did you back this up in windows 7?

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I use EaseUS ToDo into an external drive. I configured the backup adding in the entire "Profile" folder.
Also, can you explain why Firefox now shows up in 2 locations in AppData?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I ran it daily
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

possible you corruopted it when restoring.

But your not really explaining clearly how you backed up. You just say you added profile folder

excactly what steps did you do

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
The ToDo software asks you to check what folders to be backed up. When I open the backups themselves, I see that the profile is there.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
since I have several days of backups, I tried the restore from 2 different backups with the same unsuccess
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

ok... I dont think you have the booksmarks backedup

But follow the instructions here to restore them in firefox

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox

Do it to both profiles

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
There are several 100 MB there!
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
The 1st time I used the Mozilla procedure
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

follow the procedure on the link

Bookmarks are not going to be 100mb so this means nothing

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
all I know is that I backed up the entire Profile folder
Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.

follow the instructions here to restore them in firefox

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox

Do it to both profiles you have listed

Let me know the results

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
