As a surviving spouse married for at least 9 months, you should receive the greater of your own benefit on own earnings record, or: 100 percent of your spouse's benefit if you wait until full retirement age, between 71.5 percent and 99 percent of your spouse's benefit if you claim early. The soonest age is 60 (age 50 if disabled) or any age if caring for the deceased's child under age 16 (or any age if the child is disabled and receiving benefits). If your benefit on your own earnings record is higher, there will be no increase, if your benefit is lower you will get an increase of the difference between your benefit and your spouse's benefit. It generally is best to wait to full retirement age, about 7 percent of your benefit is foregone for each year early. Survivor benefits are dated from the time you apply not from the time of death. You should notify the SSA immediately when a person dies. However, you cannot report a death or apply for survivors benefits online.
