I am a former Federal employee, who has retired. My social security income is subject to an offset while I am alive, but I am not sure how my wife's benefits will be effected.

Accountant's Assistant: What's your current age and retirement age?

Dob 7/8/1951. I retired at 64.

Accountant's Assistant: Anything else you want the Retirement Accountant to know before I connect you?

I can't think of anything. Thanks. *****

Hi. …. My name’s Lane,

I hold a law degree (J.D.), with concentration in Tax Law, Estate law & Corporate law, an MBA in finance, a BBA, and CFP & CRPS (Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist) designations, as well - I’ve been providing financial, Social Security/Medicare, estate, corporate, non-profit, and tax advice, to clients on three continents, since 1986.

I’m reading your question now.

Bear with me a couple of minutes while I type up my response.

….

Then if you have further questions we can go from there.

(If the site makes one of those automated phone call offers, that DID NOT COME FROM ME. It’s an automatic offer that the site throws up there, I’d be glad to discuss this over the phone but the site charges more for that. Only accept if you’d like a call.)

There are two offsets that affect an individual who has a pension from what Social Security calls a non-covered employer (such as state teachers or another government system, where the individuals did not pay into Social Security)

...

However, these provisions only affect the person who had the non-covered work (NOT that person's spouse - UNLESS the spouse also had non-covered work)

...

  • The WEP (Windfall Elimination Provision) reduces your own work based benefit
  • The GPO (Government Pension Offset) reduces any ancillary benefit you might receive on your spouses work record (such as a spousal benefit or a survivor benefit)

...

But unless your wife worked under a non-covered job and has a pension from it, her benefits on YOUR record such as a survivor benefit or a spousal benefit, are not affected at all.

...

And of course her own work record on her own earnings record would be affected either

Please let me know if you have any questions at all, before rating me.

If not, your positive rating … (by using those the stars on your screen, and then clicking “submit”) would be appreciated.

Otherwise, I receive no compensation for the work here.

...

Thank you!
